Roosevelt Intermediate School

Message From Mr. Gechtman

This week, Roosevelt students and faculty took part in our October Advisory lesson. During our monthly Advisory lessons students meet with teachers to take part in character education, team building, and SEL lessons. During Thursday’s lesson, students engaged in activities designed to  build connections with others and their Advisory teacher. The lesson began with students identifying the connections they have with certain other students regarding general low stakes topics such as, “Pineapple belongs on pizza. Or Pineapple definitely does not belong on pizza.” and “I’m asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow. Or It takes me a while to fall asleep when I go to bed.” After discussing the connections they found with others over these scenarios, the teacher of the Advisory shared a bit about themselves and gave the students opportunities to ask them questions so that the students and teacher could build connections. I was thrilled to see how engaged the students were in this week’s Advisory lesson.

Curriculum in Focus -

Social Studies

6th Grade

  • In order to help develop strong inference skills that are well-grounded in available facts, observations and experiences, students are learning about the archeological processes that require teamwork among historians, scientists, chemists, geologists and other professionals. Student feedback is that they are hearing and experiencing the same claim and theory development, based on evidence, skill-development focus in their Language Arts classes and in their Science classes.

7th Grade

  • This month, 7th grade students have been learning about Ancient Rome. In this unit students learned about and discussed Roman geography, culture, politics and Roman leaders like Julius Caesar. Students also took a look at Ancient Roman art called mosaics. Students were able to create their own mosaic of a sailboat using construction paper tiles. Students found that it was difficult to create intricate mosaics and were able to understand what it was like for Ancient Roman artists. As this month ends, students are looking forward to starting our next unit on the Byzantine Empire!

8th Grade

  • Students are learning about various perspectives of the same event. Though people may identify as having similar characteristics, that does not mean they all experience events in the same way. When studying the American Revolution, our eighth graders were challenged to learn about the build up, event, and aftermath through the eyes of: the British, African Americans, Native Americans and Women in addition to the historical context. Students are looking forward to learning about, “What comes next?”

Message From the SRO (School Resource Officer) Officer Riga:

First, I would like to thank the Roosevelt Intermediate School community for the collective work that we all do each and every day to keep our school community safe. I would like to offer some observations of ways to keep our students and schools even safer.

  • Crossing Clark Street and Tuttle Parkway - Before and after school Clark Street and Tuttle Parkway are both busy streets. Students must only cross where there is a crossing guard and/or a crosswalk. Students must also pay attention to their surroundings while crossing (put the phone down while walking). Please note, Clark Street only allows for one side of the street parking. Furthermore, the townhouse development across the street has a private road where cars cannot park while waiting for pickup.

  • Bikes and Biking - I love that kids ride their bikes to our school. Please encourage your child to lock up their bikes. Also, students are required to wear a helmet when riding a bike in Westfield. Please remind your children of the importance of wearing a helmet while riding.
