1F and 1B took advantage of the beautiful day to go outside and be scientists. As part of their Air and Weather unit, one class was describing the weather using precise word choice while the other tested what happened when they dropped a parachute from the top of the playground equipment.

More Recess Runners!

Recess Runners is off to the races!!Students really enjoy running laps at recess. They count their laps by collecting popsicle sticks each time they circle the fields. Our parent volunteers help keep track of the laps from session to session and award prizes for every 10 laps. 10 laps gets a necklace with a foot. Every extra 10 laps gets another foot for the necklace until 80 laps gets them a water bottle. FYI: 80 laps is 10 miles!

As part of our SEL program, Responsive Classroom, we are working to help students build their self-discipline. Self discipline has a positive impact on academics but it also creates an environment where everyone is safe and able to do their best. Part of creating a positive environment is having some basic rules that everyone can follow. We also want rules to make sense. One way we accomplish this is by asking students about their Hopes and Dreams for the school year. We then work backwards and ask them what rules we need to have in our classrooms so everyone can accomplish their Hopes and Dreams. This way the rules make sense and the students helped create them which makes them easier to follow.

“Buddy Classes" 2J and 4B met to read "The Circles All Around Us". They discussed expanding their circles to meet new people and create more connections. The more connected we are, the stronger our community. They then went outside to visually represent their expanding circles with sidewalk chalk!

Students in 2-J working on creating their own community during the week of respect!

A full day of professional learning taking place during today's in-service for staff.

Schools are closed on Monday, October 10. Staff will have an in-service day.

These two students have tons of Franklin spirit! Sweatpants because being respectful is no sweat! Wearing your shirt backwards to remind yourself that you can’t take back your words once they have been said. Great start to the Week of Extra Respect!!

Pumpkin Fair: catching up with friends, getting tattoos, face paint and playing games!

Schools are closed on Wednesday, October 5 in observance of Yom Kippur.

Safety Patrol is back! Our 5th graders are busy helping to keep our school safe and running smoothly. Some students help the crossing guards while others have posts around the building to help assist our younger students. This is a great chance to develop leadership skills while also serving their community.

This week is Fire Prevention Week. We had an assembly for Grades 1-3 with the Westfield Fire Department. This assembly provides important information to keep our students safe but it’s always fun too!

The week of EXTRA respect is underway. Students are very cozy today wearing their sweat shirts and sweatpants. Today’s spirit day is “showing respect is ‘no sweat’ at Franklin School!

October 2 is National Custodian Day. We're grateful to these dedicated professionals who work hard to keep our buildings and grounds clean and safe. When we asked students if our custodians are superheroes, the answer was a resounding "YES!" https://youtu.be/wp716Z8C2Vo

More Pumpkin Fair Fun!

This week is the Week of Extra Respect and we kicked it off on Friday with a Character Education assembly. We reviewed our Pillars of Character. We read the Elephant and Piggie book, "My New Friend Is So Fun!" Our focus was:
Having close friendships is great.
Meeting new people and making new friendships is fun!
Having close friendships and including others in your play isn’t always easy.
Expand your circles!
Including more people in your fun helps ensure that no one feels left out.
Talk it out to resolve problems. You can always ask an adult for help.

At the end of out first full week, and to help promote a sense of unity, we had a school-wide assembly today to kick off our theme: Community, It Starts With Hello. We reviewed our expectations of "Be Safe, Be Kind and Be Inclusive" and then read Elephant and Piggie's "Can I Play Too?" by Mo Willems. The big ideas that we discussed were: Asking to play with others takes courage Including everyone isn't always easy Use kind words to solve problems A sense of humor always helps Assume the best intentions Ask an adult to help you when you get stuck
