For the second consecutive year and the third time in the history of its athletic department, Westfield High School has won the Group 4 ShopRite Cup. The prestigious award is presented by Wakefern Food Corporation and the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) to high school athletic programs with the most state championships and for being disqualification-free in all sports.
The top earning schools in each group - 4 public and 2 non-public schools - are named at the end of the school year. Before being awarded the ShopRite Cup for the 2022-2023 and 2021-2022 school years, Westfield High School last received the award in 2010.
The following Westfield High School teams won the NJSIAA State Group Championship:
- Girls Volleyball,
- Boys Winter/Indoor Track & Field, and
- Boys Swimming.
A number of WHS teams placed second in the State Championships, including:
- Boys Cross Country,
- Girls Tennis,
- Boys Winter/Indoor Track & Field Relays,
- Girls Swimming,
- Boys Spring Track and Field, and
- Boys Golf.
Boys Soccer and Boys Ice Hockey contributed toward the ShopRite Cup recognition, along with 15 varsity teams with nj.com rankings during the 2022-2023 school year. WHS Boys Swimming finished with a #1 ranking in New Jersey.
Supervisor of Athletics Sandra Mamary praised all who contributed to this special recognition: “As we strive to achieve the Tradition of Excellence in sports and athletics, we must also recognize the dedication and vision of our coaches, student athletes and the community to provide the support of all of our athletic programs.”
