To the Westfield Community,

Thank you to the voters of Westfield who came out in record numbers on April 20th for the school election.  The approval of the school budget is a testament to the people of this community and the value they place on education.

Congratulations to Mitch Slater on gaining a seat on the Westfield Board of Education and to Ginny Leiz and Julia Walker on their re-election.

I wish to thank Rich Solomon for his nine years of dedicated service to the students and families of Westfield and his leadership of the Facilities, Finance and Policies Committees during his terms on the Board.

I will continue to work to maintain the standards that the people of Westfield expect and that our students deserve.

Sincerely,

Margaret Dolan, Ed.D.

Budget Update

The Board of Education approved the final budget for the 2010-2011 school year on March 30 at a public hearing held in the Westfield High School cafeteria.  The budget of $89,377,980 includes $84,477,022 for the General Operating Fund, of which $81,379,595 should be raised as a 4% tax levy.  The $81,379,595 number will appear on the ballot for voters on April 20.

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Margaret Dolan, reported that the fall dramas in the intermediate schools, intermediate and high school intramurals, and 8th grade sports have been restored to the budget.  Student activity fees will be instituted to help defray the costs of the extra-curricular activities.

Re-Constructing A Budget
With Less than 1% of State Aid

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Margaret Dolan, addressed the Board of Education and the public  at Westfield High School on March 23 with a proposed budget for 2010-2011 that must take into consideration a $4.2 million cut in state aid.  Following the Commissioner's announcement on March 2, the school district expected a maximum cut of $750,000 in state aid. On March 17, a day after the Governor's budget address, the district was informed that state aid would be cut $4.22 million.

The proposed budget, outlined in the attached Powerpoint presentation, was presented to the entire Board of Education and the public on March 23.  The budget can be modified up until Tuesday, March 30, when the Board will adopt the final budget to be presented to the voters of Westfield on April 20, 2010.  Dr. Dolan had previously made requests to our representatives in Trenton to postpone the date of the school election in order to give Westfield time to prepare a thoughtful budget and to determine what "tools" districts would receive from the Governor.  Assemblyman Bramnick informed the Board and Superintendent that under normal circumstances, the legislature is not expected to convene again until May.
